IKEA BEKVÄM step stool, acacia, 50 cm: interactive 3D assembly guide
Every step of IKEA's BEKVÄM step stool manual, built in 3D. Press play to watch a step, drag to look around, or switch to Drawing to see it in the manual's black-line style.
What is in the box
Two side frames, four rails, a lower step and a top step, all solid acacia. The bag holds 8 long screws, 3 short screws, 2 dowels, and the hex key with its plastic handle.
- Work on a rug or the flattened carton, so the wood does not get scratched.
- Slide the hex key into its handle first: it turns like a crank and grips better.
All 7 steps
- 1Fix the lower rails to a side frame common mistake
Stand one side frame up, its inside towards you. Hold the back lower rail and the front rail against it, the front rail’s warning label facing out and each rail’s slanted ends lying flat against the legs, and fix each with a long screw (100215) through the leg. Turn it with the hex key until its head sits flush in its hole. Common mistake: The ends of each rail are cut at a slight slant, to match the side frames, which lean in towards the top. Upside down, a rail still takes its screw, but its ends no longer lie flat against the legs and the stool is never square. Fit it the way the first page of steps shows, the front rail’s warning label facing out.
- 2Fix the top rails
Hold the two top rails against the same frame, under the top of its back leg and its middle leg, and fix each with a long screw through the leg, turned until its head is flush.
- 3Slide in the lower step
Push a dowel (101350) by hand into each end of the lower step’s narrow back part. Slide the step in from the open side, over the front rail and between the middle legs, until its dowel goes into the hole in the side frame.
- 4Put on the second side frame common mistake
Push the second side frame onto the other ends of the four rails and onto the step’s dowel. Fix it with 4 long screws through its legs, each turned until its head sits flush in its hole. Common mistake: Turn each long screw until its head sits flush in its hole, as the close-ups in the manual show. A head left standing out has not pulled the rail tight against the leg: the joint moves, the stool wobbles, and the screw works loose.
- 5Screw the steps on from below
Lay the top step upside down on the floor. Turn the frame over and stand it on the top step, then drive 3 short screws (105111) up through the rails: one through each top rail into the top step, and one through the front rail into the lower step. Turn the stool the right way up.
- 6Press it down evenly
Stand the stool on a flat floor and press down on the top step, so that all four legs stand on the floor and it does not rock.
- 7Give every screw a last turn
With the stool standing evenly, give each of the 8 long screws a last turn with the hex key: the four in one side frame, then the four in the other. Done. Tighten them again now and then.

Questions
Do I need any tools to build the BEKVÄM step stool?
No. The hex key and its plastic handle come in the box, and the manual uses nothing else.
How much weight does the BEKVÄM step stool hold?
IKEA gives its maximum load as 100 kg.
Which way round do the rails go?
Their ends are cut at a slight slant, to match the side frames, which lean in towards the top: fit each rail so its ends lie flat against the legs. The front rail’s warning label faces out.
Why does my step stool wobble?
A screw is not tight, or it was tightened while the stool stood unevenly. Stand it on a flat floor, press down on the top step so all four legs touch, and give the 8 long screws a last turn, as the manual’s last two pages show.
Should I tighten the screws again later?
Yes: IKEA says to re-tighten the screws when necessary. The hex key’s handle makes it quicker.
Safety
A step stool that wobbles can throw you off. Tighten every screw before you use it, check them again now and then, and stand it on a flat, firm floor. IKEA gives its maximum load as 100 kg.
About this guide
The steps, the part numbers, the counts and the order come from IKEA's assembly manual AA-444158-13 (2026-05-13). The outer size, 43 × 39 × 50 cm, is IKEA's published size. The frames’ lean, the rails, the steps and the hole positions are read off the drawings and IKEA’s photos, so they are close, not measured. The 3D runs faster than real hands do.
IKEA gives its maximum load as 100 kg.
The manufacturer's instructions are on IKEA's product page (PDF). If something here differs from the manual in your box, follow the manual.
The 3D models, drawings and text are our own. IKEA and BEKVÄM are named only to say which product this guide is for.
