IKEA POÄNG armchair, birch veneer: interactive 3D assembly guide
Every step of IKEA's POÄNG armchair manual, built in 3D. Press play to watch a step, drag to look around, or switch to Drawing to see it in the manual's black-line style.
What is in the box
Two backrest sides, four slats, the seat (a sling between a front and a back piece), two curved seat bars, two side frames and two braces, all bent birch veneer, and the cushion. The bag holds 8 screws 119046, 6 screws 120925, 2 bolts 146654, 4 bolts 122606, 4 barrel nuts, 2 washers, 2 pins and the hex key.
- Work on a rug, so the veneer does not get scratched.
- The two kinds of screw and the two kinds of bolt look alike: lay them out apart before you start.
All 13 steps
- 1Push the slats into a backrest side common mistake
Lay one backrest side down and push the four slats into it, each bowed the way the manual shows, its middle towards the back. The slat with the strip of hooks goes second from the top. Common mistake: Each slat is bowed, and its middle goes towards the back, as the close-up on the manual’s first page of steps shows; the one with the X is the wrong way round. Turned over, it still fits, but it bulges forward into your back, and the backrest no longer gives the way it should.
- 2Press on the other side
Press the second backrest side onto the other ends of the four slats, all the way along.
- 3Screw one side to the slats
With the hex key, drive a screw (119046) through the side into each slat: 4 screws. The manual warns not to use the other screws (120925) here.
- 4Turn it round and screw the other side
Turn the backrest round and drive 4 more screws (119046) through the other side into the slats.
- 5Screw the seat to the backrest
Lay the seat unfolded at the backrest’s foot and fix its back piece to the two sides with 2 screws (120925), one through each side.
- 6Swing the backrest up and slide in the bars common mistake
Swing the backrest up, so the seat folds under it. Slide the two curved bars in under the sling’s sides from the front, each curved the way the manual shows, into the seat’s front and back pieces. Common mistake: The bars are curved like the seat, and the manual shows which way up they go, with an X on the other. Upside down, a bar still slides into the sling, but its curve fights the seat’s: its ends no longer meet the front and back pieces and the seat sits crooked.
- 7Screw the bars to the seat
Drive a screw (120925) down through each corner of the seat into a bar’s end: 4 screws. Then lay the chair on its side.
- 8Bolt on the first side frame
Push a pin (123786) into the backrest’s side and put a washer (102319) over the bolt hole beside it. Lay the side frame on, its armrest over the pin and the washer, and fix it with a bolt (146654), not the longer 122606, the manual warns.
- 9Fit the braces
Push the two braces onto the side frame’s holes, on their pegs. Put a barrel nut (100514) into the hole near each brace’s end and turn it with a flat screwdriver until its thread faces the bolt; then drive a bolt (122606) through the side frame into each.
- 10Turn it over and bolt on the second side frame
Turn the chair over onto the frame you have just fitted. Pin, washer and side frame as before, and a bolt (146654) through its armrest.
- 11Bolt the braces to the second frame
Put the two other barrel nuts into the braces, turn them to face the bolts, and drive a bolt (122606) through the frame into each. Then stand the chair up.
- 12Tighten the bolts again
Now and then, tighten the six bolts again with the hex key: the bolt through each armrest and the two in each side frame’s braces.
- 13Put on the cushion
Hook the cushion’s flap over the top of the backrest, onto the strip of hooks, and lay the cushion down over the slats and the seat. Done.

Questions
What tools do I need for the POÄNG armchair?
The hex key comes in the box. The manual also shows a flat screwdriver, to turn the barrel nuts in the braces until they face their bolts.
Which screws go where?
The eight screws 119046 hold the slats; the six screws 120925 hold the seat. Of the long bolts, the two shorter ones (146654) go through the armrests and the four longer ones (122606) into the braces. The manual shows each with a close-up and warns against the other.
Which way round do the slats go?
Each slat is bowed: its middle goes towards the back, so the backrest gives a little under your back. The slat with the strip of hooks goes second from the top; the cushion’s flap holds on to it.
How much weight does the POÄNG hold?
IKEA says it has been tested for people weighing up to 110 kg.
Should I tighten the bolts again later?
Yes: the manual shows the six bolts being tightened again with the hex key, the one through each armrest and the two in each side frame’s braces.
Safety
Check the bolts now and then and tighten them again: a loose armrest or brace makes the chair wobble. IKEA says the chair has been tested for people weighing up to 110 kg.
About this guide
The steps, the part numbers, the counts and the order come from IKEA's assembly manual AA-2615392-2 (2025). The outer size, 68 × 82 × 100 cm, is IKEA's published size. The curves of the bent parts, the slats, the braces and the hole positions are read off the drawings and IKEA’s photos, so they are close, not measured. The 3D runs faster than real hands do.
