How to assemble a racing-style gaming chair: interactive 3D guide

A racing-style gaming chair goes together in seven steps, and one of them has a right way round: the tilt mechanism, its arrow marked FRONT to the seat’s front. Press play to watch a step, drag to look around, or switch to Drawing for a manual’s black lines.

What is in the box

The five-star base, 5 casters, the gas lift and its dust sleeve, the seat with its recline brackets, the tilt mechanism, two armrests, the backrest, two side covers, a lumbar pillow and a neck pillow; 16 M8 screws, 2 cover screws and a hex key. You also need a cross-head screwdriver.

All 7 steps

  1. 1Press the casters into the base

Lay the base upside down. Press a caster’s stem firmly into the tip of each arm until it clicks home, then turn the base over onto its casters.

  2. 2Put in the gas lift

Take any protective cap off the gas lift’s button. Drop the lift’s tapered foot into the base’s hub and slide the dust sleeve over it, its widest ring down.

  3. 3Screw the tilt mechanism under the seat common mistake

Lay the seat upside down on a soft surface. Lay the tilt mechanism on it with the arrow marked FRONT pointing to the seat’s front, and fix it with 4 M8 screws, tightened crosswise with the hex key. Common mistake: The tilt mechanism has a front and a back: its arrow marked FRONT must point to the seat’s front, as the manuals draw it. Turned round, the seat tilts about its back edge instead of its front, so it tips forward under you, the tension knob is at the back and the levers are on the wrong sides. Take it off and turn it round before the screws go in.

  4. 4Set the seat on the gas lift

Turn the seat the right way up and lower it onto the base, the gas lift’s rod into the mechanism’s cup. Press down on the seat, or sit on it, to seat the lift.

  5. 5Screw on the armrests

Slide each armrest’s plate under the seat, over its holes, and fix it with 4 M8 screws from below with the hex key: 8 in all.

  6. 6Bolt the backrest to the brackets

Hold the backrest between the seat’s recline brackets and fix it with 2 M8 screws through each bracket, starting on the right. Turn all four in by hand first, then tighten them with the hex key.

  7. 7Fit the side covers and the pillows

Press a side cover on over each recline bracket and fix it with its small screw. Then strap the lumbar pillow round the backrest at the small of your back, and the neck pillow through the slots in its head.

Tools you need

Questions

Which way does the tilt mechanism go?

With its arrow marked FRONT pointing to the seat’s front. Fitted backwards, the seat tilts about its back edge and tips forward, and the levers end up on the wrong sides.

What tools do I need for a gaming chair?

The hex key that comes with it for the M8 screws, and a cross-head screwdriver for the side covers’ small screws.

The chair will not go up or down. Why?

Check that the gas lift’s protective cap came off its button before the seat went on, and that the lift’s rod is pushed fully into the mechanism’s cup.

Should I tighten the screws again?

Yes: check them after the first few weeks of use, and now and then after that.

Safety

Check that every screw is tight before you sit on the chair, and tighten them again after a few weeks. Keep your hands clear of the recline brackets when you work the recline lever: they snap forward.

About this guide

This is our own generic racing-style chair, not one brand’s. Its parts and steps follow the way racing chairs’ manuals put them together: the noblechairs HERO’s assembly instructions and Corsair’s T3 RUSH quick start guide, which marks the tilt mechanism with an arrow saying FRONT. Your chair’s own manual has the final word on its parts, its screws and its order.

Unlike the HERO, which comes with one armrest fitted, ours bolts both armrests on, four M8 screws each; and its backrest goes on with the seat already on the gas lift, as the HERO does it. The sizes are typical ones, so the cards give few.
