BEKVÄM step stool step 1 of 7: Fix the lower rails to a side frame

Stand one side frame up, its inside towards you. Hold the back lower rail and the front rail against it, the front rail’s warning label facing out and each rail’s slanted ends lying flat against the legs, and fix each with a long screw (100215) through the leg. Turn it with the hex key until its head sits flush in its hole.

Tools: Hex key (100092, in the box)

Common mistake: fitting a rail upside down. The ends of each rail are cut at a slight slant, to match the side frames, which lean in towards the top. Upside down, a rail still takes its screw, but its ends no longer lie flat against the legs and the stool is never square. Fit it the way the first page of steps shows, the front rail’s warning label facing out. The switch in the player shows what goes wrong.

Questions

Do I need any tools to build the BEKVÄM step stool?

No. The hex key and its plastic handle come in the box, and the manual uses nothing else.

How much weight does the BEKVÄM step stool hold?

IKEA gives its maximum load as 100 kg.

Which way round do the rails go?

Their ends are cut at a slight slant, to match the side frames, which lean in towards the top: fit each rail so its ends lie flat against the legs. The front rail’s warning label faces out.

Why does my step stool wobble?

A screw is not tight, or it was tightened while the stool stood unevenly. Stand it on a flat floor, press down on the top step so all four legs touch, and give the 8 long screws a last turn, as the manual’s last two pages show.

Should I tighten the screws again later?

Yes: IKEA says to re-tighten the screws when necessary. The hex key’s handle makes it quicker.

Safety

A step stool that wobbles can throw you off. Tighten every screw before you use it, check them again now and then, and stand it on a flat, firm floor. IKEA gives its maximum load as 100 kg.

About this guide

The steps, the part numbers, the counts and the order come from IKEA's assembly manual AA-444158-13 (2026-05-13). The outer size, 43 × 39 × 50 cm, is IKEA's published size. The frames’ lean, the rails, the steps and the hole positions are read off the drawings and IKEA’s photos, so they are close, not measured. The 3D runs faster than real hands do.

IKEA gives its maximum load as 100 kg.

The manufacturer's instructions are on IKEA's product page (PDF). If something here differs from the manual in your box, follow the manual.

The 3D models, drawings and text are our own. IKEA and BEKVÄM are named only to say which product this guide is for.
