IKEA VIHALS sideboard, white, 140×37×75 cm: interactive 3D assembly guide
Every step of assembling the IKEA VIHALS sideboard, built in 3D. Press play to watch a step, drag to look around, or switch to Drawing to see it in clean black lines.
Unpack the parts and sort the hardware
Lay the panels on the flattened carton or a soft rug so their painted faces cannot get scratched. Sort the hardware bags: 8 drawer runners (10060247), 12 runner screws (10048881), 8 cup hinges (10071303), 6 block feet (10061178), 8 wooden dowels (101345), 4 snap sleeves (10050769) with 4 snap pins (10050771), 4 lock screws (10077982) with the hex key (100092), the wall-anchoring set (10003780, 105811, 106989, 109049, 100823, 121714, 109048), 8 shelf supports (10051660), 6 handles (10071494), 20 short Euro screws (146114), 4 door bumpers (102384), and the drawer fittings (130449, 119030, 10040242, 145718).
- Notice the pre-mounted wedge dowels on the top and bottom ends of the two side panels and the central partition: keep them clear of the floor until they click into the bottom and top panels.
- Separate the 12 slightly longer runner screws (10048881, 13 mm) from the 20 shorter Euro screws (146114, 10 mm) used later on the handles and drawer sides.
All 36 steps
- 1
Screw a drawer runner onto each face of the partition
Lay the central partition flat. Place a right-hand cabinet drawer runner (10060247) across the three pre-drilled holes near the top edge, its nylon wheel at the front edge, and secure it with 3 Euro screws (10048881). Turn the partition over and screw a left-hand cabinet runner (10060247) onto the opposite face with 3 more Euro screws (10048881).
- 2
Screw the left cabinet runner onto the left side panel
Lay the left side panel inner face up, with its back rabbet on the left. Set the second left-hand cabinet runner (10060247) over the three holes near the top end, its wheel at the front edge, and drive 3 Euro screws (10048881) through the first, middle and back holes.
- 3
Screw the right cabinet runner onto the right side panel common mistake
Lay the right side panel inner face up, with its back rabbet on the right. Set the second right-hand cabinet runner (10060247) over the three holes near the top end, its wheel at the front edge, and secure it with 3 Euro screws (10048881). Common mistake: Each cabinet runner has its nylon roller at the front end, flush with the smooth front edge of the side panel. If you screw the runner on with the roller toward the rabbeted back edge, the drawer side has nothing to roll on at the front opening.
- 4
Press the six block feet into the sides and partition
Press two white block feet (10061178) firmly into the twin holes at the bottom end of the left side panel, two into the bottom end of the partition, and two into the bottom end of the right side panel, beside the protruding wedge dowels.
- 5
Lay the bottom panel down and push in four dowels
Set the bottom panel flat on the floor with its keyhole slots facing up. Push 4 wooden dowels (101345) into the four round holes along its top back edge.
- 6
Click the left side panel into the bottom panel
Stand the left side panel upright over the left end of the bottom panel, with its runner at the top and its rabbet at the back. Lower its two bottom wedge dowels into the wide ends of the keyhole slots and its two feet through the rectangular openings, then push the panel forward until it clicks.
- 7
Click the central partition into the bottom panel common mistake
Lower the central partition onto the middle of the bottom panel, with its runners at the top and the four holes in its narrow edge facing the back. Drop its wedge dowels into the middle keyhole slots and its feet through the openings, then push it forward until it clicks. Common mistake: Check that the nylon wheels of both runners face the front of the bottom panel and the four holes in the partition’s edge face the four wooden dowels at the back before you slide the partition forward into its keyhole slots.
- 8
Click the right side panel into the bottom panel
Stand the right side panel over the right end of the bottom panel, runner at the top and back rabbet at the back. Lower its wedge dowels and feet into the right-hand slots and push the panel forward until it clicks.
- 9
Push four wooden dowels into the lower back panel
With the lower back panel lying on the floor, push 4 wooden dowels (101345) halfway into the four holes along its top edge.
- 10
Slide the lower back panel down into the back grooves
Lift the lower back panel, with its four dowels pointing up, and slide it down from above along the rabbets in the back edges of the left and right side panels until its bottom edge seats onto the four dowels in the bottom panel.
- 11
Lock the lower back panel to the partition with two snap fittings
From the back of the cabinet, push 2 white snap sleeves (10050769) through the two middle holes in the lower back panel into the partition. Press a white snap pin (10050771) flush into the centre of each sleeve to lock it.
- 12
Slide the upper back panel down onto the lower back panel
Slide the upper back panel down along the side rabbets, with its two corner cutouts at the top, until its bottom edge seats onto the four wooden dowels in the top edge of the lower back panel.
- 13
Lock the upper back panel to the partition with two snap fittings
Push the remaining 2 snap sleeves (10050769) through the two middle holes in the upper back panel into the partition, then press the remaining 2 snap pins (10050771) flush into the sleeves.
- 14
Click the top panel onto the sides and partition
Lift the top panel onto the frame so the six wedge dowels at the top of the left side, partition and right side drop into the wide ends of the six keyhole slots on its underside. Push the top panel firmly toward the back until all six joints click.
- 15
Drive the four lock screws into the back of the top and bottom
At the back of the sideboard, use the hex key (100092) to drive 4 lock screws (10077982) into the pre-drilled holes at the left and right ends of the bottom and top panels. These screws sit directly behind the wedge dowels so the panels cannot slide loose.
- 16
Screw the two corner brackets inside the side panels
Inside the top back corner of the left and right side panels, hold a corner bracket (10003780) with its slotted arm reaching horizontally across the corner cutout of the upper back panel. Fasten each bracket to the side panel with 2 Euro screws (105811).
- 17
Move the sideboard to the wall, fit the wall brackets and mark the holes
Move the sideboard into place against the wall. Set a wall bracket (106989) onto each corner bracket (10003780) with its vertical slotted leg flat against the wall, and thread a screw (109049) with a washer (100823) loosely down through the horizontal slot. Mark the wall through the upper slot of each bracket with a pencil.
- 18
Drill the two holes in the wall and tap in the wall plugs
Move the sideboard away from the wall. Drill an 8 mm hole 60 mm deep at each pencil mark, then push and tap a wall plug (121714) flush into each hole with a hammer.
- 19
Anchor the brackets to the wall and tighten the bracket screws common mistake
Push the sideboard back against the wall. Drive a long wall screw (109048) through a washer (100823) and the vertical slot of each wall bracket into the wall plug, then tighten the two vertical bracket screws (109049) down onto the corner brackets. Common mistake: Always anchor the sideboard to the wall with both brackets before loading the shelves or sliding in the drawers. When both drawers are pulled out together, an unanchored cabinet can tip forward.
- 20
Push the eight shelf supports into the sides and partition
Choose one of the three hole heights inside each bay and push 4 white plastic shelf supports (10051660) into the left bay and 4 into the right bay, all at the same level.
- 21
Slide the two shelves in onto their supports
Tilt each shelf into its bay above the four shelf supports (10051660) and lower it down so all four corners click under the upper lips of the supports.
- 22
Press two hinges into each of the four doors and tighten them
Lay the four doors inner face up on the floor. Press 2 cup hinges (10071303) into the 35 mm cup holes of each door, with the mounting arms pointing out over the hinged edge, and tighten the two built-in screws on each hinge cup with a cross-head screwdriver.
- 23
Hang the four doors on the sides and central partition
Hold each door open against its bay—the outer doors against the left and right side panels, the inner doors against both faces of the central partition—line up the two built-in screws on each hinge arm with the pilot holes, and drive them in with a cross-head screwdriver.
- 24
Screw a lip handle onto the top edge of each door
Hook a white aluminium handle (10071494) over the top edge of each door above the two small holes near its meeting corner, and fasten each handle from the inside of the door with 2 short Euro screws (146114).
- 25
Stick a bumper inside each door and close the doors
Peel the backing off the 4 clear bumpers (102384) and press one onto the inside of each door near its top free corner, below the handle. Swing all four doors shut.
- 26
Screw four cam bolts into the back of each drawer front
Lay the two drawer fronts face down on the rug. With a cross-head screwdriver, screw 4 cam bolts (130449) into the two pairs of holes near the left and right ends of each drawer front until their shoulders sit flush.
- 27
Stand the drawer sides onto the drawer fronts
Lower a left and a right drawer side onto the cam bolts of each drawer front, with the bottom grooves on the inside facing each other and the two round cam-lock holes on the inside.
- 28
Lock the drawer sides to the fronts with eight cam locks
Push 4 composite cam locks (119030) into the round holes on the inner faces of each drawer’s sides, their arrows pointing down toward the drawer front, and turn each clockwise with a flat screwdriver until it locks.
- 29
Slide the drawer bottoms into the grooves
Slide each white-painted fibreboard drawer bottom down along the grooves in the drawer sides, painted face toward the inside of the drawer, until its leading edge seats all the way into the groove of the drawer front.
- 30
Push a wire bottom holder into each drawer front
For each drawer, push the two front prongs of a wire drawer-bottom holder (10040242) into the two small holes in the back of the drawer front just under the middle of the drawer bottom, so the wire runs back along the underside of the bottom.
- 31
Set the drawers flat and fit the drawer backs
Set both drawers flat on their bases. Lower each drawer back down between the rear ends of the drawer sides, with its four round cam-lock holes facing the inside of the drawer and the rear hook of the wire holder (10040242) clipping up over its bottom edge.
- 32
Tap the eight plastic drawer dowels through the drawer sides
Push 2 white plastic drawer dowels (145718) into the rear holes on the outside of each drawer side—four per drawer—and tap them flush with a hammer so they pass through the sides into the ends of the drawer back.
- 33
Lock the drawer backs with the remaining eight cam locks
Push the remaining 8 cam locks (119030)—four per drawer—into the round holes on the inner face of each drawer back, their arrows pointing outward toward the drawer sides, and turn each clockwise with the flat screwdriver.
- 34
Turn the drawers upside down and screw on the drawer runners
Turn both drawers upside down. Lay a left and a right drawer runner (10060247) along the bottom edges of each drawer’s sides, with the front end flush against the back of the drawer front and the nylon wheel at the back corner. Fasten each runner with 2 short Euro screws (146114).
- 35
Turn the drawers upright and screw on the two drawer handles
Turn both drawers the right way up. Hook the last 2 white handles (10071494) over the middle of the top edge of each drawer front and fasten each from inside with 2 short Euro screws (146114).
- 36
Slide both drawers into the sideboard
Tilt the back of each drawer slightly down to engage its rear wheels over the front wheels of the cabinet runners inside the left and right bays, then level the drawer and push it all the way in.
Questions
Why does the VIHALS sideboard have two different short Euro screws (10048881 and 146114)?
The 12 slightly longer pan-head screws (10048881, 13 mm) attach the four cabinet drawer runners to the thick side panels and partition in steps 1–3. The 20 shorter screws (146114, 10 mm) fasten the six lip handles (10071494) and the four drawer-side runners so they do not poke through the 16 mm fronts or 12 mm drawer sides.
How do the wedge dowels on the sides and partition lock into the bottom and top panels?
The side panels and partition come with factory-fitted ribbed wedge dowels on their top and bottom ends. Drop the dowels into the wide ends of the keyhole slots in the bottom panel (steps 6–8) and push each upright toward the front until it clicks; then lower the top panel onto the upper dowels (step 14), push it toward the back until it clicks, and secure both panels at the back with the four hex lock screws (10077982) in step 15.
How many doors and shelves does the 140×37×75 cm VIHALS sideboard have?
It has two bays separated by a central partition, with one adjustable shelf (max load 18 kg) on four pins (10051660) in each bay, two full-width drawers at the top, and four doors below—two hinged on the outer side panels and two hinged on the central partition.
Safety
This sideboard must be anchored to the wall with the enclosed wall brackets, using screws and plugs that suit your wall, so it cannot tip over when the drawers and doors are opened.
About this guide
This is an independent 3D engineering guide modeled from physical hardware specifications and standard fastener part numbers so you can identify your pieces before building. The outer size, 140 × 37 × 75 cm, is IKEA's published size. The outer size and max. shelf load are IKEA’s. Board thicknesses, drawer sizes and hole positions are our own estimates. The 3D runs faster than real hands do.
IKEA gives a max. load of 18 kg per shelf for this sideboard.
The manufacturer's instructions are on IKEA's product page (PDF). If something here differs from the manual in your box, follow the manual.
The 3D models, drawings and text are our own. IKEA and VIHALS are named only to say which product this guide is for.
