Fitting it
A dowel or pin joins two boards and keeps them in line. Push it into its hole by hand or tap it in with a hammer, as the manual shows, until the length it shows stands out (often about half): the part that stands out goes into the next board. Driven all the way in, it no longer joins anything.
Taking it out
Grip the part that stands out with pliers and pull it straight out, turning it a little. One that broke off in its hole can be drilled out slowly with a wood drill bit of its own width, no deeper than the hole, and a new one fitted.
