IKEA RUDSTA glass-door cabinet, anthracite, 80×37×120 cm: interactive 3D assembly guide
Every step of assembling the IKEA RUDSTA 80×37×120, built in 3D. Press play to watch a step, drag to look around, or switch to Drawing to see it in clean black lines.
Before you start
Unpack both boxes on a rug or the flattened cardboard so the powder-coated steel frames and four tempered glass panels cannot scratch. Check the 19 cabinet pieces and 48 fittings against the checklist below, and keep the two hex keys (4 mm 130445 and 3 mm 100006) to hand.
- Two people are needed to stand, turn and move the glass-door cabinet safely.
- Hold tempered glass panels by their edges and never rest them on a hard floor or knock their corners.
All 22 steps
- 1
Bolt the two bottom rails to the right side frame common mistake
Lay the right side frame flat on the rug. Stand the bottom back rail (marked 1) and bottom front rail (marked 2, with the two small stop holes near the middle and two pivot holes on top) onto the lower mounting lugs of the right side frame, and fasten each corner with a black button-head screw (10073004) using the 4 mm hex key (130445). Common mistake: Check the markings on the two bottom rails before bolting them down: rail 2 goes at the front with its two middle door-stop holes and two outer pivot-bushing holes, while plain rail 1 goes at the back.
- 2
Bolt the two top rails to the right side frame
Stand the top back rail (marked 3) and top front rail (marked 4, with the door pivot holes at both ends) onto the upper mounting lugs of the right side frame, and drive two black button-head screws (10073004) with the 4 mm hex key (130445).
- 3
Lower the left side frame onto the four rails and bolt all four corners
Lower the left side frame onto the top ends of all four upright rails (1, 2, 3 and 4) so every corner lug lines up, then drive four black button-head screws (10073004) with the 4 mm hex key (130445).
- 4
Thread the four adjustable feet into the bottom of the posts
Screw the four adjustable feet (103095) all the way into the threaded inserts in the bottom ends of the four corner posts by hand.
- 5
Fit the steel bottom panel into the frame
Angle the sheet-steel bottom panel between the side frames and hook its notched corners down over the four bottom rails so it sits flat across the base.
- 6
Fasten the two door stops behind the bottom front rail
Slide the two black steel door stops (10060813) down into the slots at the front edge of the bottom panel so their rounded tabs poke up at the front middle, and secure them from behind into the bottom front rail with two black button-head screws (10073004) and the 4 mm hex key (130445).
- 7
Stand the frame upright and press six pivot bushings into the bottom rails
With a helper, stand the frame upright on its four feet. Press six black plastic pivot bushings (10055922) firmly down into the holes along the bottom rails: two in the right side crossbar, two in the left side crossbar, and two at the outer ends of the bottom front rail.
- 8
Press four pivot bushings into the two removable top side rails
Take the two removable top side rails lying on the floor and press two black plastic pivot bushings (10055922) into the holes on each rail (four bushings in total).
- 9
Set the right glass side panel onto its bottom pivot bushings
Hold the right glass side panel upright between the right front and back posts and lower its two bottom pivot pins into the two bushings (10055922) in the right bottom crossbar. Keep a hand on the glass panel until step 10 locks it at the top.
- 10
Fit the right top rail over the glass side panel and screw it to the posts
Fit the right top rail down between the front and back posts so its two underside bushings (10055922) slip over the top pivot pins of the right glass side panel, then drive two zinc countersunk screws (117784) through the front and back posts with the 4 mm hex key (130445).
- 11
Set the left glass side panel onto its bottom pivot bushings
Lower the left glass side panel between the left front and back posts so its two bottom pivot pins sit in the two bushings (10055922) in the left bottom crossbar, and hold the panel steady for step 12.
- 12
Fit the left top rail over the glass side panel and screw it to the posts
Press the left top rail down onto the top pivot pins of the left glass side panel and fasten both ends through the front and back posts with two zinc countersunk screws (117784) and the 4 mm hex key (130445).
- 13
Screw the lower and middle steel back panels to the back posts
Place the lower back panel and middle back panel against the back of the posts with their folded horizontal shelf-support lips at the top facing into the cabinet, and fasten all eight corners with eight black button-head screws (10073004) using the 4 mm hex key (130445).
- 14
Fasten the lower corners of the upper back panel and turn the cabinet around
Set the upper back panel above the middle back panel with its two wall-anchoring slots near the top, and drive two black button-head screws (10073004) into its lower corners with the 4 mm hex key (130445). Leave the two top corner holes open for step 18, then turn the cabinet 180° so the open front faces you.
- 15
Hang the right glass door and drive its top pivot screw flush common mistake
Set the bottom pivot pin of the right glass door into the right bushing on the bottom front rail, align the top of the door under the top front rail, and drive one door pivot screw (10055656) down through the top front rail with the 3 mm hex key (100006) until its top sits completely flush. Common mistake: Do not leave the door pivot screw (10055656) sticking up above the top front rail — turn it with the 3 mm hex key (100006) until its top sits completely flush with the rail.
- 16
Hang the left glass door and drive its top pivot screw flush
Set the bottom pivot pin of the left glass door (the door with the top slide latch) into the left bushing on the bottom front rail, hold the door upright, and drive the second door pivot screw (10055656) flush into the top front rail with the 3 mm hex key (100006).
- 17
Slide the steel top panel onto the cabinet from front to back
Set the sheet-steel top panel over the top rails from the front and slide it back until its front rim hooks under the top front rail and its rear flange drops behind the upper back panel. Notice the cable cut-outs at the rear corners if you plan to fit cabinet lighting.
- 18
Bolt the rear flange of the top panel to the upper back corners
Drive the last two black button-head screws (10073004) through the rear flange of the top panel and the top corners of the upper back panel into the back posts using the 4 mm hex key (130445).
- 19
Move the cabinet against the wall, level the feet and mark the anchor holes
Move the cabinet into place against the wall. Check it with a spirit level and turn the four adjustable feet (103095) until the cabinet stands level and steady, then mark the wall through the two upper back-panel holes with a pencil.
- 20
Anchor the cabinet to the wall and snap on the two black cover caps common mistake
Drill the two marked holes and tap in wall plugs suited to your wall. Slide the two black distance plates (114664) down behind the upper back panel so they bridge the gap between the cabinet and the wall, hold the two galvanized washers (126916) over the inside slots, drive two wall screws into the plugs, and press the two black square cover caps (133304) over the washers. Common mistake: With both glass doors swung open and loaded shelves, a 120 cm cabinet can tip forward if it is not anchored through its upper back panel. Always fit both distance plates (114664), washers (126916), wall screws and cover caps (133304).
- 21
Hook the four shelf supports into the front posts and stick on the clear bumpers
Hook the four black plastic shelf supports (10126583) down into the bracket tabs welded inside the front-left and front-right posts at both shelf levels, then peel the four clear self-adhesive bumpers (107091) from their backing cards and press one into the round top recess of each shelf support.
- 22
Rest the two tempered glass shelves on the rear lips and front supports
Angle the lower glass shelf and upper glass shelf inside the cabinet and lower each one onto the folded steel lip along the top of the back panel at the rear and the two cushioned shelf supports (10126583) at the front. Slide the top bolt latch on the left door up into the top rail when you want to lock the left door closed.
Questions
What is the difference between the two M6 screws (10073004 and 117784) in the RUDSTA box?
Part 10073004 (22×) is a black button-head screw (M6 × 14 mm) used on the main frame rails, door stops, steel back panels and top panel. Part 117784 (4×) is a shorter zinc-plated countersunk screw (M6 × 12 mm) used only in steps 10 and 12 to fasten the removable top side rails flush through the front and back posts. Both use the 4 mm hex key (130445).
Which hex key drives the top door pivot screws (10055656)?
The two headless door pivot screws (10055656) take the smaller 3 mm hex key (100006) in steps 15 and 16. Drive each screw down through the top front rail until its top face sits flush with the rail so the smooth 4 mm tip engages the door and the steel top panel can slide flat over the rail in step 17.
How much weight can each RUDSTA glass shelf hold, and are the back panels magnetic?
IKEA rates each of the two tempered glass shelves for a maximum load of 9 kg. The three back panels are powder-coated sheet steel, so you can attach magnets to them inside the display cabinet, and the rear corners under the top panel leave an opening for cabinet lighting cables.
How do you keep the left glass door closed on the RUDSTA 80×37×120 cm cabinet?
The left glass door has an integrated slide bolt at its top inner corner. Slide that bolt up into the slot on the underside of the top front rail to hold the left door shut; the right door then closes against the left door and the two bottom door stops (10060813).
Safety
Furniture tip-over can cause serious or fatal crushing injuries. Always anchor this cabinet to the wall using the enclosed distance plates (114664), washers (126916) and cover caps (133304) with screws and plugs suited to your wall material, and handle the tempered glass panels by their edges on a soft surface.
About this guide
This is an independent 3D engineering guide modeled from physical hardware specifications and standard fastener part numbers so you can identify your pieces before building. The outer size, 80 × 37 × 120 cm, is IKEA's published size. Built from the 22 steps and 13 numbered fittings of the RUDSTA 80×37×120 cm assembly booklet, with dimensions, materials and 9 kg per-shelf load rating from IKEA’s product specifications. The 3D runs faster than real hands do.
IKEA rates each tempered glass shelf of the RUDSTA 80×37×120 cm cabinet for a maximum load of 9 kg, and notes that magnets stick to the powder-coated steel back panels.
The manufacturer's instructions are on IKEA's product page (PDF). If something here differs from the manual in your box, follow the manual.
