Start the screw by hand so it goes in straight, then drive it with the tool the manual shows: a cross-head screwdriver for a cross, a flat one for a slot, the hex key for a hex socket. Stop as soon as its head sits snug, as one more turn can strip a hole in particleboard. A drill-driver is too strong for most flat-pack screws.

Taking it out

Turn it anticlockwise with the same tool. A head whose cross has worn round can still be gripped with a rubber band pressed between it and the screwdriver. A hole that no longer grips can take a glued wooden dowel, left to dry and drilled again.
