IKEA OMAR 1 shelf section, galvanised, 92×36×181 cm: interactive 3D assembly guide

Every step of assembling the IKEA OMAR 92×36×181, built in 3D. Press play to watch a step, drag to look around, or switch to Drawing to see it in clean black lines.

What is in the boxes

The section is two OMAR shelving units of 92×36×94 cm, built one after the other and stacked. Each box holds 4 grooved posts, 3 wire shelves and a bag with 4 adjustable feet (139294), 24 shelf clip halves (130531), 4 caps (139285), 2 wall fittings (10054272) and 2 spacers (10054270), so 8 posts and 6 shelves in all. Wall screws and plugs are not included.

All 18 steps

  1. 1 Screw the feet into the posts

Lay the 4 posts of the first unit on the floor. Turn an adjustable foot (139294) by hand into the hole in the sleeve on the bottom end of each post.

  2. 2 Clip on the bottom clips

Clip a shelf clip round each post at the groove a little way up from the foot: two halves (130531), one from each side, pressed together round the post until they lock, narrow end towards the top of the post. Put them at the same groove on all 4 posts.

  3. 3 Push two posts through the first shelf common mistake

Stand a shelf on its long back edge in front of the tops of the two posts lying side by side, its underside (where the wire ends bend down) towards the feet. Push the two posts through its two lower corner sleeves until their clips meet the sleeves. Common mistake: A shelf has a top and an underside: its wire ends bend down at the front and the back, and the support wires run underneath. With the posts lying flat, the underside faces the feet. Stood the other way round, as the manual crosses out, its corner sleeves sit the wrong way on the clips, which hold a shelf only one way up, and the bent wire ends point upwards in the finished unit. Turn it over before you push the posts through.

  4. 4 Push the other two posts through

Push the other two posts through the shelf’s two upper corner sleeves the same way, until their clips meet the sleeves. The shelf now sits near the feet of all four posts.

  5. 5 Stand it up and clip on the middle clips

Stand the unit up on its feet. Clip a shelf clip round each post at the middle groove, the same groove on all four posts: two halves (130531) at a time, narrow end up.

  6. 6 Lower the middle shelf onto the clips

Lower the second shelf, the right way up, over the tops of the posts, a corner sleeve round each post, and push it down until the sleeves wedge onto the middle clips.

  7. 7 Clip on the top clips

Clip a shelf clip round each post at the groove near its top, the same groove on all four: two halves (130531) each, narrow end up.

  8. 8 Lower the top shelf onto the clips

Lower the third shelf over the posts and push it down until its corner sleeves wedge onto the top clips.

  9. 9 Press the caps into the posts

Press a cap (139285) into the open top of each post. The first unit is built.

  10. 10 Second unit: the feet and the bottom clips

Build the second unit the same way. Lay its 4 posts on the floor, turn a foot (139294) into each, and clip a shelf clip (130531) round each at the same groove as in step 2.

  11. 11 Second unit: the first shelf and its posts

Stand its first shelf on its long back edge, underside towards the feet, and push all 4 posts through its corner sleeves until their clips meet them, as in steps 3 and 4.

  12. 12 Second unit: stand it up, the middle shelf

Stand the second unit up, clip a shelf clip round each post at the middle groove, and lower the second shelf onto the clips, as in steps 5 and 6.

  13. 13 Second unit: the top shelf and the caps

Clip the top clips on, lower the third shelf onto them and press a cap (139285) into each post, as in steps 7 to 9.

  14. 14 Stand the first unit at the wall, caps off

Stand the first unit where it goes, with its back to the wall. Pull the 4 caps out of the tops of its posts: the second unit’s posts go in there. Keep the caps.

  15. 15 Take the sleeves off the second unit

Lay the second unit on its back. Pull the sleeve, with its foot, off the bottom end of each of its 4 posts, so the narrow ends of the posts are bare. Stand it up again.

  16. 16 Lift the second unit on top

Lift the second unit and lower it onto the first, so the narrow ends of its 4 posts go down into the open tops of the first unit’s posts. The manual shows no more than two units stacked.

  17. 17 Clip on the wall fittings

Check how far the skirting board holds the posts off the wall. Up to 3 mm, the fittings go on without a spacer; for about 10 or 15 mm, push a spacer (10054270) onto the back of each fitting first, as here. Clip a wall fitting (10054272) round each back post just under each unit’s top shelf: 4 in all.

  18. 18 Screw the fittings to the wall common mistake

Fix each wall fitting to the wall through the hole in its block, with a screw and plug that suit your wall (not in the box). Use screws with a round head, not a countersunk one. Done. Common mistake: Pulled at the top or climbed on by a child, a free-standing section 181 cm tall tips forward and falls, with everything on its shelves. That is why IKEA says it must be fixed to the wall: fix all four fittings, with screws and plugs that suit your wall.

Questions

How do you stack two OMAR shelving units?

Build both units the same way. Pull the 4 caps out of the tops of the lower unit’s posts, pull the sleeves, with their feet, off the bottom ends of the upper unit’s posts, then lift the upper unit on so the narrow ends of its posts go into the lower unit’s posts. IKEA shows no more than two units stacked.

Which way up do the OMAR shelves go?

The wire ends bend down at the front and back of each shelf: that is its underside. While the first shelf stands on its edge for the posts, its underside faces the feet; the other two go on the right way up, lowered over the posts.

Do I need tools to assemble OMAR?

No tools for the shelving itself: the feet, clips, shelves and caps all go on by hand. For the wall fittings you need a screwdriver for your wall screws, and screws and plugs that suit your wall, which are not in the box.

Do I have to fix the OMAR section to the wall?

Yes. IKEA says it must be securely anchored: each box has two wall fittings, which clip round the back posts under the top shelf, and two spacers for a skirting board.

How much can each OMAR shelf hold?

IKEA gives a maximum load of 33 kg for each shelf.

Safety

Furniture that tips over can cause serious or fatal crushing injuries. IKEA says this shelving must be securely anchored to the wall with the wall fittings in the box. Wall screws and plugs are not included: use ones that suit your wall, and ask a professional if you are unsure. Stack no more than two units, and use it only indoors.

About this guide

This is an independent 3D engineering guide modeled from physical hardware specifications and standard fastener part numbers so you can identify your pieces before building. The outer size, 92 × 36 × 181 cm, is IKEA's published size. The outer sizes (92 × 36 × 94 cm a unit, 181 cm stacked), the shelves’ 33 kg load, the boxes’ weights and the hardware’s sizes and materials are IKEA’s; the posts’ grooves and sleeves, the shelves’ wires and heights and where the wall fittings sit are our own estimates. The 3D runs faster than real hands do.

IKEA gives a maximum load of 33 kg for each shelf. Only for indoor use.

The manufacturer's instructions are on IKEA's product page (PDF). If something here differs from the manual in your box, follow the manual.
