IKEA TROFAST stepped storage frame, pine, 94×44×91 cm: interactive 3D assembly guide

Every step of assembling the IKEA TROFAST stepped frame, built in 3D. Press play to watch a step, drag to look around, or switch to Drawing to see it in clean black lines.

What is in the box

A bottom panel, a low divider, a tall divider, three stepped top panels (low, middle and high), two plinth strips, a low left side and a tall right side; 20 dowels (101350), 8 long dowels (101354), 20 long hex screws (100229), 18 guide rails (120056), 18 rail screws (100349), 2 wall brackets (106989), 2 bracket screws (109049), 4 washers (100823) and a hex key (100001).

All 10 steps

  1. 1 Set the two dividers on the bottom panel common mistake

Stand the bottom panel on its back edge. Push 4 dowels (101350) into its top face and push the low divider (left) and tall divider (right) onto them, with each divider’s upper rail holes facing the taller column to its right. Common mistake: Each stepped divider has rail holes higher up on its right face (for the taller column) and step dowel holes on its left face (for the lower top panel). If you turn the divider round, the low top panel cannot seat on its dowels and the upper rail holes face outside.

  2. 2 Screw the bottom panel to the dividers

Drive 4 long hex screws (100229) through the underside of the bottom panel into the two dividers using the hex key (100001).

  3. 3 Fit the low top panel to the low divider

Push 2 long dowels (101354) into the left face of the low divider, push the low top panel onto them, and drive 2 long hex screws (100229) through the low divider into the end of the low top panel.

  4. 4 Fit the middle top panel across the middle step

Push 2 long dowels (101354) into the top edge of the low divider and 2 into the left face of the tall divider. Fit the middle top panel onto all 4 long dowels and secure it with 4 long hex screws (100229).

  5. 5 Fit the high top panel to the tall divider

Push 2 long dowels (101354) into the top edge of the tall divider, set the high top panel onto them, and drive 2 long hex screws (100229) down through the high top panel into the tall divider.

  6. 6 Set the two plinth strips under the bottom

Push 4 dowels (101350) into the underside of the bottom panel and set the front and back plinth strips onto them.

  7. 7 Attach and screw the low left side

Push 6 dowels (101350) into the left ends of the low top panel, the bottom panel and both plinth strips. Push the low left side onto the dowels and fasten it with 4 long hex screws (100229).

  8. 8 Attach and screw the tall right side

Push 6 dowels (101350) into the right ends of the high top panel, the bottom panel and both plinth strips. Push the tall right side onto the dowels and fasten it with 4 long hex screws (100229).

  9. 9 Stand the frame up and screw in the 18 guide rails

Stand the stepped frame upright on its plinth. Screw the 18 guide rails (120056) to the inner faces of the sides and dividers, three in each column on both faces, using 18 short screws (100349) and a cross-head screwdriver.

  10. 10 Fit the wall brackets and anchor to the wall

Fasten the 2 wall brackets (106989) to the back of the high top panel with 2 washers (100823) and 2 screws (109049). Move the frame against the wall and anchor it through both brackets with 2 washers (100823) and wall screws suited to your wall.

Questions

What tools do I need to assemble the TROFAST stepped pine frame?

The box includes the hex key (100001) for the 20 long hex screws (100229). You also need a cross-head screwdriver for the 18 guide-rail screws (100349) and the 2 wall-bracket screws (109049).

Where do the 8 long dowels (101354) go?

The 8 long dowels (101354) join the three stepped top panels (low, middle and high) to the two inner vertical dividers; the 20 shorter dowels (101350) go into the bottom panel, plinth strips and outer sides.

Which way round do the two inner dividers go?

Each stepped divider has rail pilot holes higher up on its right face (facing the taller column) and step dowel holes on its left face (for the lower top panel). Always orient the taller row of rail holes towards the higher side.

Are the plastic guide rails included with the pine frame?

Yes, 18 polypropylene guide rails (120056) and 18 rail screws (100349) come in the box; the TROFAST storage boxes and pine shelves are sold separately.

Safety

Warning: always secure this stepped storage frame to the wall using the included anti-tip brackets (106989) so children cannot pull it over. Wall screws and plugs are sold separately to match your wall.

About this guide

The part numbers and counts match IKEA's assembly instructions, so you can check each piece against your box. The outer size, 94 × 44 × 91 cm, is IKEA's published size. The 94×44×91 cm dimensions and hardware numbers follow IKEA manual AA-56006-12; board thicknesses and hole offsets are our own geometric estimates. The 3D runs faster than real hands do.

The manufacturer's instructions are on IKEA's product page (PDF). If something here differs from the manual in your box, follow the manual.

The 3D models, drawings and text are our own. IKEA and TROFAST are named only to say which product this guide is for.
