KALLAX 77×147 step 19 of 19: Fix it to the wall

Push the unit back against the wall. Put a wall fitting (103693) on over each screw head through the round hole of its keyhole, slide it down so the screw sits in the slot, and tighten the screw with the flat screwdriver. Then push a cover (115754) over each bracket. Done.

Tools: Flat screwdriver

Common mistake: leaving it standing without the wall fixing. Pulled at the top or climbed on by a child, a free-standing unit tips forward and falls; at 147 cm tall it falls with force. That is why IKEA says it must be fixed to the wall: fix both brackets, with screws and plugs that suit your wall. The switch in the player shows what goes wrong.

Questions

How many dowels does the KALLAX 77×147 use?

Forty-four wooden dowels, part 101339, 6 × 50 mm: four at every joint of the shelves and dividers. Each goes halfway into one board and halfway into the next.

Why are there 8 glides when it only needs 4?

Standing upright, as this guide builds it, it stands on 4 glides under the bottom board. Lying on its long side, as the manual also shows, it uses all 8.

Which way round do the side boards go?

Each long side has two small holes near one long edge, at both ends. That edge goes at the back, at the bottom while you build, so the wall bracket can be screwed into them in step 16.

Do I have to fix KALLAX to the wall?

Yes. IKEA says it must be fixed to the wall with the two brackets in the box, so it cannot tip over. The wall screws and plugs are not included: use ones that suit your wall.

What tools do I need?

A hammer for the dowels, a cross-head screwdriver for the bracket screws, a flat screwdriver for the wall screws, a pencil and a spirit level. The hex key for the long screws is in the box.

Safety

Furniture that tips over can cause serious or fatal crushing injuries. IKEA says this unit must be fixed to the wall with the brackets in the box. Wall screws and plugs are not included: use ones that suit your wall, and ask a professional if you are not sure.

About this guide

The steps, the part numbers, the counts and the order come from IKEA's assembly manual AA-2703471-1 (2026-03-09). The outer size, 76.5 × 39 × 146.5 cm, is IKEA's published size. Board thickness, hole positions and the bracket height are read off the drawings, so they are close, not measured. The 3D runs faster than real hands do.

Each shelf holds up to 13 kg, according to IKEA.

The manufacturer's instructions are on IKEA's product page (PDF). If something here differs from the manual in your box, follow the manual.

The 3D models, drawings and text are our own. IKEA and KALLAX are named only to say which product this guide is for.
