The parts' sizes are our 3D model's own estimates: close, not measured. The outer size (40 × 47 × 56 cm), the 15.6 cm drawer fronts, the drawers’ inside (33 × 40 cm), the loads, the package weight and the hardware’s sizes are IKEA’s. IKEA gives the depth as 47 cm and 44 cm along the top: our body is 44 cm deep and the back castors stand out behind it. The sheet thicknesses, the rails, the runners, the tabs, the castors’ height and the hole positions are our own estimates, so they are close, not measured. IKEA publishes only the outer size.

IKEA TROTTEN drawer unit, anthracite, 40×47×56 cm: interactive 3D assembly guide
Every step of assembling the IKEA TROTTEN drawer unit, built in 3D. Press play to watch a step, drag to look around, or switch to Drawing to see it in clean black lines.
What is in the box
Two side frames, two bottom rails, a back panel and a top, and three drawers, each a bottom, two sides, a back, a front and a handle. The hardware: 12 countersunk screws (112581), 12 screws (116654), 4 screws (106917) and 6 handle screws (105021), 3 pairs of drawer runners, 4 twin castors (195274), the lock (10072577) for the middle drawer’s front with its two keys, and a spanner (146714). You need a flat and a cross-head screwdriver.
- Work on a rug or the flattened carton, so the powder coating is not scratched.
- On the anthracite unit the screws are black: 116654, 106917 and 105021 are then 10074016, 10086028 and 10074018.
All 18 steps
- 1
Lay out the side frames
Lay the two side frames inside up on a rug, side by side, their rounded front edges outward.
- 2
Screw the runners onto the side frames
Lay 3 runners across each side frame, their wheels at the front, and screw each one on with 2 countersunk screws (112581) and a cross-head screwdriver: 12 screws in all. Use only these screws for the runners, not 116654 or 106917.
- 3
Fit the back bottom rail
Stand the two side frames on their back edges, inside facing in, the runners’ wheels up. Push the back bottom rail onto their bottom ends until it clicks, and screw each end from below with a screw (106917).
- 4
Fit the front bottom rail and stand the frame up
Push the front bottom rail onto the bottom ends the same way until it clicks, and screw each end with a screw (106917). Then stand the frame up on its bottom end.
- 5
Slide the back panel down common mistake
Slide the back panel down from the top between the side frames, with its curled edges hooked round their back edges, until its foot rests on the back bottom rail. Common mistake: Each long edge of the back panel is curled into a hook that must go round the back edge of a side frame and slide down it, as the manual warns. Slid down beside the edge instead, the panel only leans on the frame: it falls back as soon as the frame moves, and its foot is not where the tabs can hold it. Lift it out and slide it down again with both curls round the edges.
- 6
Bend the tabs over the back panel’s foot
With a flat screwdriver, bend the two tabs on the back bottom rail back over the back panel’s foot, so the panel cannot lift out.
- 7
Put the top on
Lower the top onto the frame, its slots over the three tabs on each side frame’s top rail, and slide it back until the tabs hold it.
- 8
Lay it on its back and lock the top
Lay the frame on its back. Through the open front, bend the tab on each side frame’s top rail back against the rail with a flat screwdriver, so the top cannot slide forward again.
- 9
Fit the castors and turn it over
Turn the frame upside down onto its top. Screw a castor (195274) into each corner of the bottom rails by hand and tighten it with the spanner (146714). Then turn the frame over onto its castors.
- 10
Drawers: hook the sides onto the bottoms
Now the three drawers, all three at each step. Lay each drawer bottom flat and hook a side onto each long edge, its wheel at the back, then push it back so the bottom’s tabs catch.
- 11
Drawers: slide in the backs
Slide a back down between the back ends of each drawer’s sides, into their slots.
- 12
Drawers: bend the tabs
With a flat screwdriver, bend in the tab at the back of each side over the back, and lift the two tabs at the bottom’s back edge up against it: four tabs a drawer.
- 13
Drawers: push on the fronts
Push a front onto the front ends of each drawer’s sides until its brackets catch them. The front with the lock goes on the middle drawer.
- 14
Drawers: screw the fronts on
From inside each drawer, drive 4 screws (116654) through the front’s brackets into the sides, 2 a side, with a cross-head screwdriver.
- 15
Drawers: fit the handles
Set a handle in the notch on the top edge of each front, its two posts in the holes, and screw it on from below with 2 screws (105021).
- 16
Slide in the top drawer
Set the top drawer on the top pair of runners and push it all the way in.
- 17
Slide in the middle drawer
Push the middle drawer, the one with the lock, in on the middle runners.
- 18
Slide in the bottom drawer
Push the bottom drawer in on the bottom runners. Done.
Questions
What do the tabs do on the TROTTEN drawer unit?
Tabs cut in the steel hold some of its parts. Two on the back bottom rail hold the back panel, one on each side frame keeps the top from sliding forward, and four on each drawer hold its back. Each is bent over with a flat screwdriver.
Which screws go where in TROTTEN?
The 12 countersunk screws (112581) hold the runners, the 4 screws 106917 the bottom rails, the 12 screws 116654 the drawer fronts and the 6 screws 105021 the handles. On the anthracite unit they are the black ones: 10086028, 10074016 and 10074018.
Which TROTTEN drawer has the lock?
The middle one: the lock is at the top right of its front. Slide it in on the middle runners.
What tools do I need?
A flat screwdriver and a cross-head screwdriver. The spanner (146714) for the castors is in the box.
How much can the TROTTEN drawer unit hold?
IKEA gives 5 kg for each drawer and 20 kg for the whole unit.
Safety
Keep within the loads IKEA gives: 5 kg for each drawer and 20 kg for the whole unit. Build it on a rug or the flattened carton, as the manual shows, so the powder coating is not scratched.
About this guide
This is an independent 3D engineering guide modeled from physical hardware specifications and standard fastener part numbers so you can identify your pieces before building. The outer size, 40 × 47 × 56 cm, is IKEA's published size. The 3D runs faster than real hands do.
IKEA gives a maximum load of 5 kg for each drawer and 20 kg in all; the drawers are 33 cm wide and 40 cm deep inside.
The manufacturer's instructions are on IKEA's product page (PDF). If something here differs from the manual in your box, follow the manual.
The 3D models, drawings and text are our own. IKEA and TROTTEN are named only to say which product this guide is for.
