IKEA TRONES shoe cabinet/storage, white, 52×18×39 cm: interactive 3D assembly guide

Every step of assembling the IKEA TRONES shoe cabinet, built in 3D. Press play to watch a step, drag to look around, or switch to Drawing to see it in clean black lines.

What is in the box

The pack holds two 52×18×39 cm polypropylene shoe cabinets, each with its tilting compartment already fitted inside the shell. No hardware is in the box because the only fasteners are the four wall screws and plugs per cabinet, which you choose to suit your wall. Have a cross-head screwdriver, a pencil and a spirit level ready.

All 7 steps

  1. 1 Unclip and lift out the tilting compartment

Pull the top of the compartment forward to tilt it open. Reach inside the lower-left corner, press the left side wall of the compartment inward until its pivot hole clears the oblong pivot lug on the cabinet wall, and lift the compartment up and out of the cabinet.

  2. 2 Hold the cabinet on the wall and mark the upper holes

Set the compartment aside and hold the empty cabinet shell against the wall where you want it to hang. With a pencil, mark the wall through the narrow top end of both upper keyhole slots in the back wall (2 marks).

  3. 3 Level the upper marks and start the 2 upper screws common mistake

Lower the cabinet clear of the wall and hold a spirit level across the two pencil marks to check that they are level. Drive a pan-head wall screw into the wall (or wall plug) at each mark with the cross-head screwdriver, leaving the screw heads standing out a few millimetres from the wall. Common mistake: Leave the pan heads standing out a few millimetres from the wall in this step. If you drive them flat against the wall now, the keyhole slots in the back of the cabinet cannot hook over the screw heads in step 4; all four screws are tightened in step 6.

  4. 4 Hang the cabinet and mark the 2 lower screw holes

Fit the round lower openings of the two keyhole slots over the upper screw heads and let the cabinet slide down so it hangs on the screws. With the pencil, mark the wall through the two round lower holes near the bottom of the back wall (2 marks).

  5. 5 Take the cabinet off and start the 2 lower screws

Lift the cabinet up off the upper screws and set it down clear of the wall. Check the two lower marks with the spirit level, then drive a pan-head wall screw into the wall at each lower mark, again leaving the heads standing out a few millimetres.

  6. 6 Hang the cabinet back on and tighten all 4 wall screws common mistake

Hang the cabinet back on the wall over the four screws so every screw head sits inside the back wall. Tighten all 4 wall screws with the cross-head screwdriver until their pan heads bear firmly against the inside of the back wall. Common mistake: Once the cabinet is back on the wall in step 6, tighten all four screws against the inside of the back wall. If you leave the screw heads standing out as they were in steps 3 and 5, the cabinet pulls forward on the shanks whenever you tilt the compartment open.

  7. 7 Refit the tilting compartment and close the door

Lower the tilting compartment back into the cabinet, slotting its lower-right pivot hole onto the right pivot lug first. Press the lower-left side inward, snap its pivot hole over the left pivot lug, and tilt the compartment shut. Done.

Questions

Are wall screws included with the IKEA TRONES shoe cabinet?

No. Wall screws and plugs are not in the box because the right fixing depends on whether your wall is plasterboard, masonry or wood. Each cabinet takes 4 pan-head screws (not countersunk).

How do you remove the TRONES door for mounting or cleaning?

Tilt the compartment open, reach inside the lower-left corner, press the left side wall inward until its pivot hole clears the oblong pivot lug on the cabinet side wall, and lift the compartment out.

Can you stack TRONES cabinets or join them side by side?

Yes. The recessed bottom foot of an upper cabinet nests into the recessed top tray of the cabinet below (fix every cabinet to the wall with 4 screws). Placed side by side, two cabinets can also be joined through the mid-height side hole with a screw at most 13 mm long.

How many pairs of shoes fit in TRONES 52×18×39 cm?

IKEA rates the 2-pack at about 4 pairs of shoes in total, or roughly 2 pairs per cabinet.

Safety

TRONES is only 18 cm deep and does not stand on its own: every cabinet must be fixed to the wall with 4 screws and wall plugs suited to your wall.

About this guide

This is an independent 3D engineering guide modeled from physical hardware specifications and standard fastener part numbers so you can identify your pieces before building. The outer size, 52 × 18 × 39 cm, is IKEA's published size. The overall size (52×18×39 cm) and package weight (5.09 kg for the 2-pack) are IKEA’s; wall thickness and hole positions are our own estimates. The 3D runs faster than real hands do.

Each 2-pack holds about 4 pairs of shoes (around 2 pairs per cabinet), and the recessed top tray holds keys, coins or a phone.

The manufacturer's instructions are on IKEA's product page (PDF). If something here differs from the manual in your box, follow the manual.

The 3D models, drawings and text are our own. IKEA and TRONES are named only to say which product this guide is for.
