What is in the box

A solid pine bottom panel, left side, central partition, right side, top panel, four corner legs, two side stretcher rails, two cross stretcher rails, a notched back panel, and six pine drawers (fronts, grooved sides, bottoms, and backs). The hardware bags hold 36 cam bolts (118331), 24 frame dowels (101350), 12 frame cam locks (119081), 8 leg screws (100214), 4 long base screws (100229), 2 wall brackets (106989) with 2 washers (100823) and 2 screws (109049), 20 nails (101201), 24 drawer dowels (101345), 24 drawer cam locks (103114), 24 plastic wedge dowels (110519), 12 drawer runners (118790), 36 countersunk screws (100365), 6 wooden knobs (117615), 6 knob screws (100413), and a hex key (100001).

All 19 steps

  1. 1 Screw cam bolts into the bottom and top panels

Lay the bottom panel and top panel flat, inside faces up. Screw 6 cam bolts (118331) into the bottom panel and 6 into the top panel with a cross-head screwdriver: 2 at each end and 2 in the middle for the central partition.

  2. 2 Push wooden dowels into the sides and partition

Push 12 wooden dowels (101350) in by hand: 2 into each end of the left side panel, the central vertical partition, and the right side panel.

  3. 3 Fit the left side, central partition, and right side common mistake

Push the left side panel, the central vertical partition, and the right side panel onto the cam bolts and dowels of the bottom panel. Make sure the central partition faces forward so its runner channels sit recessed from the front edge. Common mistake: The central vertical partition has identical dowel and cam-bolt spacing at both ends, so it is easy to mount back-to-front. When reversed, the runner stops sit 1.8 cm too far forward and the drawers stick out proud of the pine frame instead of closing flush. Always align the recessed front ends of the channels toward the front edge before locking the partition.

  4. 4 Lock the sides and partition to the bottom panel

Insert 6 frame cam locks (119081) into the lower inside faces of the left side, central partition, and right side, and turn each clockwise with a flat screwdriver.

  5. 5 Fit and lock the top panel

Push the top panel onto the top ends of the sides and central partition, then insert 6 frame cam locks (119081) just under the top panel and turn them clockwise.

  6. 6 Screw the wall brackets under the top panel

Place 2 steel wall brackets (106989) under the back corners of the top panel and secure each with a steel washer (100823) and a screw (109049).

  7. 7 Fit the rear corner legs and side stretcher rails

Push 4 wooden dowels (101350) under the bottom panel corners and 4 into the ends of the two side stretcher rails. Fit the two rear corner legs and both side stretcher rails against the underside of the bottom panel.

  8. 8 Fit the front corner legs and cross stretcher rails

Fit the two front corner legs onto the side rails and bottom panel, push 4 wooden dowels (101350) into the ends of the front and back stretcher rails, and set both cross stretcher rails between the left and right legs.

  9. 9 Bolt the pine leg frame with the hex key

Drive 8 hex wood screws (100214) through the four corner legs into the ends of the side and cross stretcher rails with the hex key (100001), then drive 4 long hex screws (100229) through the front and back stretcher rails into the bottom panel.

  10. 10 Turn the chest frame onto its front

With a helper, carefully lift and turn the assembled pine chest frame over onto its front edge so the back faces upward for the back panel.

  11. 11 Nail the back panel on and stand the chest upright

Lay the notched back panel over the back of the frame, hammer 20 nails (101201) into the top, bottom, outer sides, and central partition to square the chest, and stand the chest upright on its four pine legs.

  12. 12 Drawers: screw cam bolts into the six fronts

Lay all six solid pine drawer fronts face down and screw 4 cam bolts (118331) into the back of each front: 24 cam bolts in all.

  13. 13 Drawers: push in dowels and stand the 12 sides

Push 2 wooden dowels (101345) into the front end of each of the 12 drawer sides, then stand a left and a right side on each drawer front with the bottom grooves facing inward.

  14. 14 Drawers: lock the 12 sides to the fronts

Insert 4 cross-slotted cam locks (103114) inside each drawer’s sides (24 in all) and turn them clockwise with a cross-head screwdriver.

  15. 15 Drawers: slide the six bottoms into the grooves

Slide a fibreboard bottom along the aligned side grooves of each of the six drawers until it seats cleanly into the front groove.

  16. 16 Drawers: fit the backs and hammer in the wedge dowels

Slide a pine drawer back between the rear ends of each drawer’s sides over the bottom panel, and hammer 4 plastic wedge dowels (110519) through the outside of each drawer’s sides into its back (24 in all).

  17. 17 Drawers: screw on left and right runners flush

Turn all six drawers upside down. Fit a left-hand and a right-hand drawer runner (118790) under each drawer’s sides with the nylon roller wheel at the back and the bent tab against the drawer front. Drive 3 countersunk screws (100365) per runner (36 in all) completely flush.

  18. 18 Drawers: turn upright and screw on the wooden knobs

Turn all six drawers upright. Hold a solid pine knob (117615) on the centre hole of each drawer front and secure it from inside with a knob screw (100413).

  19. 19 Slide all six drawers into the pine chest

Angle the rear wheels of each drawer into the left and right cabinet channels, lift the front level, and slide all six drawers home until their fronts sit flush with the pine frame. Anchor the chest to the wall before use.

Questions

Why do my TARVA drawers stick out proud of the pine frame instead of closing flush?

This happens if the central vertical partition is mounted back-to-front so its cabinet channels sit too far forward, or if the left and right drawer runners (118790) are swapped on the drawer boxes.

How are the four pine corner legs and stretcher rails fastened to the TARVA frame?

The four legs and four stretcher rails are aligned with 8 × 30 mm wooden dowels (101350), bolted together through the legs with 8 hex wood screws (100214), and drawn tight under the bottom panel with 4 long countersunk hex screws (100229) using the included hex key (100001).

What is the difference between the two cam locks included with the TARVA 6-drawer chest?

The 12 grey composite cam locks (119081) lock the main pine cabinet frame with a flat screwdriver, while the 24 metal cross-slotted cam locks (103114) lock the six drawer boxes with a cross-head screwdriver.

Can untreated solid pine on the TARVA chest be painted, stained, or waxed?

Yes. TARVA is made of untreated solid pine, so you can oil, wax, stain, lacquer, or paint the frame, legs, drawer fronts, and wooden knobs (117615).

Safety

WARNING! Serious or fatal crushing injuries can occur from furniture tip-over. Always secure this chest of drawers to the wall using the included tip-over restraints (106989).

About this guide

The part numbers and counts match IKEA's assembly instructions, so you can check each piece against your box. The outer size, 155 × 39 × 92 cm, is IKEA's published size. Overall dimensions (155 × 39 × 92 cm), inside drawer dimensions (68 × 33 × 16 cm), package weights, and hardware counts follow IKEA article 803.607.05 and manual AA-1920996-6; board thicknesses and hole coordinates are our own estimates from the assembly drawings. The 3D runs faster than real hands do.

Each of the six solid pine drawers measures 68 × 33 × 16 cm inside.

The manufacturer's instructions are on IKEA's product page (PDF). If something here differs from the manual in your box, follow the manual.
