The parts' sizes are our 3D model's own estimates: close, not measured. The cabinet’s outer size is IKEA’s; the panels’ thickness, the rails, the compartments’ size and their plastic sides’ shape, and where the pivots are, are our own estimates, so they are close, not measured. IKEA publishes only the outer size.

IKEA STÄLL shoe cabinet with 4 compartments, white, 96×17×90 cm: interactive 3D assembly guide

What is in the box
Two side panels, a central divider, a top panel, two back rails, a bottom rail and two front legs; for the four compartments, four fronts, eight plastic sides, four back boards, four narrow boards and four shelves. Hardware: 12 cam screws (118331), 12 cam locks (118224), 18 dowels (101350), 8 pivots (10097027) with 8 screws (100347), 32 screws (112792), 24 screws (109535), 8 stop rings (10095065), 4 knobs (117615) with 4 knob bolts (100413), and 2 wall screws (109048) with 2 plugs (121714) and 2 washers (100823).
- STÄLL has only two front legs so its back sits flush against the wall above the skirting board: it must be anchored to the wall before use.
All 21 steps
- 1
Screw the cam screws in
With the panels on a rug, screw 12 cam screws (118331) into the holes in the two sides and the top panel’s underside, all the way in.
- 2
Fit the first six pivots
Tap a pivot (10097027) into each of the two holes inside the right side, the left side and the right face of the central divider, and screw each plate down with a screw (100347).
- 3
Stand the rails on the right side
Lay the right side on the rug, its inside up. Push a dowel (101350) into each end of the two back rails and the bottom rail, and stand all three on the right side.
- 4
Lock the rails and fit the divider
Push a cam lock (118224) into the lower end of each rail and turn it with the flat screwdriver to grip the right side’s cam screw. Push a dowel (101350) into the middle of the top back rail and the bottom rail, then lower the central divider onto them.
- 5
Fit the divider’s upper pivots
Tap two pivots (10097027) into the upper face of the central divider with the hammer and screw each plate down with a screw (100347).
- 6
Fit and lock the left side
Lower the left side onto the rails’ upper ends, then push a cam lock (118224) into each rail’s upper end and turn it with the flat screwdriver to lock the left side on.
- 7
Turn the frame upside down
Turn the assembled frame over so it stands upside down above the top panel, its open top end facing down.
- 8
Lower the frame onto the top
Push 6 dowels (101350) into the top panel’s underside beside its cam screws, then lower the upside-down frame onto the top panel.
- 9
Lock the top panel on
Push a cam lock (118224) into each of the six holes near the top ends of the two sides and the central divider, now at the bottom, and turn each to lock the top panel on.
- 10
Fit the front legs and stand up
Push two dowels (101350) into the front foot of each side panel, press the two front legs onto the dowels, then turn the cabinet the right way up.
- 11
Screw the plastic sides to the fronts
Lay the four compartment fronts face down and screw a plastic side to each end of each front with three screws (112792), the curved edge towards the top of the front: 24 screws in all.
- 12
Slide in the four back boards
Take the four widest compartment boards and slide one into the upper slots of each compartment’s plastic sides.
- 13
Screw the back boards on
Drive a countersunk screw (109535) through each plastic side into the end of each back board: 2 per compartment, 8 screws in all.
- 14
Slide in the four narrow boards
Take the four narrowest boards and slide one into the lower slots of each compartment’s plastic sides, along the foot of the front.
- 15
Screw the narrow boards on
Drive a countersunk screw (109535) through each plastic side into the end of each narrow board: 2 per compartment, 8 screws in all.
- 16
Fit the two upper compartments
Lay the cabinet on its back. Lower the two upper compartments into the left and right bays so the slot at the foot of each plastic side slides right over its pivot’s peg.
- 17
Fit the two lower compartments
Lower the two lower compartments into the left and right bays in the same way, their plastic sides’ slots pushed right over the lower pivots.
- 18
Fit the stop rings and stand up
Screw a stop ring (10095065) inside each bay wall under each compartment’s foot with a screw (112792) by hand: 8 stop rings in all. Then stand the cabinet up.
- 19
Anchor the cabinet to the wall common mistake
Mark the wall through the two holes in the top back rail, drill 8 mm holes 70 mm deep in a solid wall and tap in two wall plugs (121714). Move the cabinet against the wall, tilt the two upper compartments open, and drive two wall screws (109048) with washers (100823) through the top back rail into the plugs. Common mistake: STÄLL has only two front legs so its back clears the skirting board, and is only 17 cm deep. Left unanchored, it tips forward immediately when a shoe compartment is pulled open. Always screw the top back rail to the wall.
- 20
Slide in and screw the shelves
Tilt the lower compartments open too. Slide a divider shelf into the slots in each compartment’s plastic sides and drive a screw (109535) through each plastic side into the shelf: 8 screws in all.
- 21
Fit the knobs and shut
Hold a knob (117615) on the front of each compartment and drive a knob bolt (100413) through the front from inside, then tilt all four compartments shut.
Questions
Why does STÄLL only have two legs at the front?
STÄLL is designed with legs only at the front so its back sits flush against the wall right above your skirting board. Because it has no back legs and is only 17 cm deep, it must be screwed to the wall.
How many pairs of shoes does the 4-compartment STÄLL hold?
IKEA says it holds about 8 pairs of shoes. You can move or remove the divider shelf inside each compartment to fit boots or larger shoes.
Which board goes where in each compartment?
The wider board slides in first between the upper hooks of the plastic sides; the narrowest board slides in along the foot of the front; the removable shelf goes in last after the cabinet is anchored to the wall.
A compartment catches or does not close flush. What should I check?
Check that the slot at the bottom of each plastic side is pushed all the way onto its pivot peg on the side panel and central divider, and that all eight stop rings are screwed in.
Safety
From the manual: this shoe cabinet must be fixed to the wall. It has only two front legs and cannot stand safely on its own: unanchored, it will tip forward when opened and can cause serious or fatal crushing injuries.
About this guide
The part numbers and counts match IKEA's assembly instructions, so you can check each piece against your box. The outer size, 96 × 17 × 90 cm, is IKEA's published size. The cabinet’s outer size is IKEA’s; the panels’ thickness, the rails, the compartments’ size and their plastic sides’ shape, and where the pivots are, are our own estimates, so they are close, not measured. The 3D runs faster than real hands do.
IKEA says it holds about 8 pairs of shoes across its four tilt-out compartments.
The manufacturer's instructions are on IKEA's product page (PDF). If something here differs from the manual in your box, follow the manual.
The 3D models, drawings and text are our own. IKEA and STÄLL are named only to say which product this guide is for.
