IKEA SONGESAND bed frame, white/brown, 160×200 cm: interactive 3D assembly guide

Every step of assembling the IKEA SONGESAND bed, built in 3D. Press play to watch a step, drag to look around, or switch to Drawing to see it in clean black lines.

What is in the box

Two 95 cm headboard posts, a headboard lower rail, a centre stile, two recessed headboard panels, a headboard upper rail, two 41 cm footboard posts, a footboard panel, a footboard upper rail, two 200 cm bed side rails, two galvanized steel mattress support ledges, a two-piece telescoping SKORVA centre beam, two diagonal corner cross-braces, and two 80×200 cm slatted bed bases. The hardware bags hold 16 cam bolts (118331), 14 wooden dowels (101350), 16 cam locks (119081), 12 countersunk screws (100365), 8 pan-head screws (105344) for the 139434 centre brackets and cross-braces, and 8 slatted base alignment pins (110525).

All 10 steps

  1. 1 Stand the headboard posts and fit the rail hardware

Stand the left and right headboard posts at the head end, screw 4 cam bolts (118331) into their inner faces, and push 4 wooden dowels (101350) beside them.

  2. 2 Assemble the twin-panel headboard frame

Fit the headboard lower rail between the posts, push 2 wooden dowels (101350) into the centre stile ends, stand the centre stile in the middle, slide the left and right infill panels into the grooves, and cap with the headboard upper rail.

  3. 3 Lock the headboard and fit the head-end corner bolts

Insert 4 cam locks (119081) into the inner face of the headboard rails and turn clockwise, then fit 4 cam bolts (118331) and 2 wooden dowels (101350) into the headboard posts for the bed sides.

  4. 4 Assemble the footboard posts, panel, and top rail

Stand the left and right footboard posts, fit 4 cam bolts (118331) and 2 wooden dowels (101350) into their inner faces, fit the footboard panel between them, push 2 dowels into its top edge, and cap with the footboard upper rail.

  5. 5 Lock the footboard and fit the foot-end corner bolts

Insert 4 cam locks (119081) into the inner face of the footboard and turn clockwise, then screw 4 cam bolts (118331) and push 2 wooden dowels (101350) into the footboard posts for the bed sides.

  6. 6 Hook and lock the left and right bed side rails

Lower the left and right 200 cm bed side rails onto the corner cam bolts and dowels at the headboard and footboard, then insert and tighten 8 cam locks (119081) on the inner faces.

  7. 7 Screw the steel mattress support ledges inside both bed sides common mistake

Position the left and right galvanized steel mattress support ledges along the matching height row inside the bed sides with the flat flange at the top, and drive 12 countersunk screws (100365)—six into each side. Common mistake: Mounting the left and right steel mattress support ledges on different height rows (upper vs. lower) or upside down tilts the slatted bed base so it misses the SKORVA centre beam.

  8. 8 Mount the centre brackets and extend the SKORVA beam

Fasten the headboard and footboard centre beam brackets (139434) with 4 pan-head screws (105344), drop the outer sleeve of the galvanized steel SKORVA beam onto the headboard bracket, and slide the inner channel out onto the footboard bracket.

  9. 9 Fit the diagonal cross-braces and slatted base pins

Lay the left and right galvanized steel diagonal corner cross-braces between the SKORVA centre beam and the side support ledges, drive 4 pan-head screws (105344) to lock them, and press 8 plastic alignment pins (110525) into the top support holes.

  10. 10 Lay the two 80×200 cm slatted bed bases onto the frame

Lower the left and right 80×200 cm birch slatted bed bases onto the side support ledges and SKORVA centre beam so the end slats hook over the 8 plastic alignment pins (110525).

Questions

Why does my SONGESAND slatted bed base sit uneven or rock on the SKORVA centre beam?

Each SONGESAND bed side rail has two rows of pre-drilled holes for adjustable mattress height. If one steel support ledge is screwed into the upper row and the other into the lower row—or if a ledge is mounted upside down—the slatted base sits tilted. Mount both steel ledges flange-up on the same hole row with the 100365 countersunk screws.

Does the IKEA SONGESAND 160×200 cm bed frame require a SKORVA centre support beam?

Yes—every 140×200, 160×200, and 180×200 cm SONGESAND bed frame requires the telescoping galvanized steel SKORVA centre support beam (article 901.245.34) to carry the inner edges of the two 80×200 cm slatted bed bases.

What do the two diagonal metal straps on the SONGESAND bed frame do?

The two galvanized steel diagonal corner cross-braces bolt between the SKORVA centre beam and the left and right steel mattress support ledges using four 105344 pan-head screws. They triangulate the 160×200 cm frame so the side rails cannot bow or rack out of square.

How much under-bed clearance does the SONGESAND bed frame have?

There is 18 cm of clear height underneath the 200 cm side rails, sized to roll two or four SONGESAND under-bed storage boxes directly underneath the frame.

Safety

Never use the bed frame without the SKORVA centre support beam and both diagonal corner cross-braces screwed in place. Periodically check that all 16 cam locks (119081) and 12 ledge screws (100365) remain tight.

About this guide

The part numbers and counts match IKEA's assembly instructions, so you can check each piece against your box. The outer size, 207 × 173 × 95 cm, is IKEA's published size. Built from the IKEA SONGESAND bed frame 160×200 cm assembly manual (AA-2020744-6, article 192.410.66) and SKORVA centre support beam instructions. The 3D runs faster than real hands do.

Takes a 160 × 200 cm mattress and two 80 × 200 cm slatted bed bases supported by the galvanized steel SKORVA centre beam; 18 cm clearance under the side rails fits SONGESAND under-bed storage boxes.

The manufacturer's instructions are on IKEA's product page (PDF). If something here differs from the manual in your box, follow the manual.

The 3D models, drawings and text are our own. IKEA and SONGESAND are named only to say which product this guide is for.
