IKEA PAX wardrobe frame 100×58×236 cm: interactive 3D assembly guide

Every step of assembling the IKEA PAX 100×58×236, built in 3D. Press play to watch a step, drag to look around, or switch to Drawing to see it in clean black lines.

What is in the box

Two tall sides, a top, a bottom, a finished front plinth, a raw back support rail, a folded back panel and two shelves. The hardware bag holds 16 dowels (101350), 8 cam bolts (118331), 8 cam locks (119081), 24 nails (101201), 8 shelf supports (131372), 2 wall brackets (106989), 2 screws (109041) and 4 washers (100823).

All 12 steps

  1. 1 Push in the wooden dowels

Push 16 wooden dowels (101350) by hand into the ends of the front plinth, the back support rail, the bottom panel and the top panel: 2 in each end.

  2. 2 Screw the cam bolts into the sides

Lay both tall sides flat, holes up. With a cross-head screwdriver, screw 8 cam bolts (118331) into the bottom and top holes of the sides: 4 in each side.

  3. 3 Fit the base plinths and bottom panel common mistake

Push the finished front plinth, the raw back support rail and the bottom panel onto the first side over the dowels and cam bolts. Make sure the front plinth’s white foiled edge faces up against the bottom panel. Common mistake: Unlike the raw back support rail, the front plinth is finished on its front face and top edge. If you flip it so its raw edge faces forward or swap it with the back rail, bare chipboard shows under the bottom panel and cannot be turned once the sides are locked.

  4. 4 Lock the bottom panel

Insert 2 cam locks (119081) into the round holes underneath the bottom panel next to the first side, arrows pointing to the side, and turn them clockwise with a flat screwdriver.

  5. 5 Fit and lock the top panel

Push the top panel onto the top end of the first side, with its 4 round cam-lock holes facing down towards the inside. Insert 2 cam locks (119081) and tighten them clockwise.

  6. 6 Lay the second side on top

With two people, turn the second side over and lower it onto the dowels and cam bolts of the plinths, bottom and top. Press it down evenly at both ends.

  7. 7 Lock the second side

Insert 4 cam locks (119081) into the round holes underneath the bottom and top panels next to the second side, and turn each clockwise until tight.

  8. 8 Turn onto the front and unfold the back panel

With two people, carefully roll the frame onto its front. Unfold the painted back panel and slide it into the rebate along the back edges of the sides and top.

  9. 9 Nail on the back panel

Check that the frame is square, then hammer 24 nails (101201) around the perimeter of the back panel: 6 into the bottom, 6 into the top and 6 down each side.

  10. 10 Stand it up and anchor it to the wall common mistake

Check that you have at least 244 cm of ceiling clearance, then tip the frame upright with two people. Screw both wall brackets (106989) to the top with washers (100823) and screws (109041), move the wardrobe against the wall and anchor both brackets into the wall. Common mistake: At 236 cm high, an unanchored PAX wardrobe shifts its centre of gravity forward as soon as hinged doors or loaded drawers are opened. Always secure both top wall brackets (106989) into wall studs or masonry plugs before loading the wardrobe.

  11. 11 Push in the shelf supports

Push 8 metal shelf supports (131372) into the side hole rows at the heights you want for the two shelves: 4 supports per shelf, level front and back.

  12. 12 Place the shelves inside

Lift each of the 2 shelves into the wardrobe and lower its corner recesses onto the 4 shelf supports (131372). Done.

Questions

How much ceiling height do I need to stand up a 236 cm PAX frame?

When built lying on the floor, a 58 cm deep and 236 cm tall PAX frame needs at least 244 cm of ceiling height to clear the diagonal as you tilt it up. If your ceiling is 237–243 cm high, build the frame standing upright.

Which way goes the PAX base plinth?

The finished white plinth goes at the front with its foiled top edge against the underside of the bottom panel, while the raw particleboard rail goes at the back.

What hardware parts hold the PAX frame together?

Sixteen wooden dowels (101350), eight cam bolts (118331), eight cam locks (119081), twenty-four back panel nails (101201) and two wall brackets (106989) with washers (100823) and screws (109041); interior shelves rest on shelf supports (131372).

Do I have to anchor PAX to the wall?

Yes. IKEA requires every PAX frame to be anchored to the wall using the included top brackets so the 236 cm frame cannot tip forward when doors or drawers are opened.

Safety

Furniture that tips over can cause serious or fatal crushing injuries. Always anchor this 236 cm PAX frame to the wall using the brackets in the box and wall plugs suited to your wall.

About this guide

The part numbers and counts match IKEA's assembly instructions, so you can check each piece against your box. The outer size, 100 × 58 × 236 cm, is IKEA's published size. Panel thicknesses, plinth layout and hole positions are our own estimates from IKEA’s assembly drawings. The 3D runs faster than real hands do.

Requires at least 244 cm of ceiling height to tilt upright when assembled lying flat on the floor.

The manufacturer's instructions are on IKEA's product page (PDF). If something here differs from the manual in your box, follow the manual.

The 3D models, drawings and text are our own. IKEA and PAX are named only to say which product this guide is for.
