IKEA IVAR shelving unit with cabinet, pine, 89×50×179 cm: interactive 3D assembly guide
Every step of assembling the IKEA IVAR shelving unit, built in 3D. Press play to watch a step, drag to look around, or switch to Drawing to see it in clean black lines.
What is in the box
Two pre-assembled solid pine side units (50×179 cm), two galvanized steel straps of the OBSERVATÖR cross-brace, three solid pine shelves (83×50 cm), and the IVAR pine cabinet module (bottom, top, two sides, back panel, interior shelf and two doors). The hardware bags hold 20 steel shelf supports (101324 / 131372), 6 wood screws (109041), 8 cam bolts (118331), 8 wooden dowels (101350), 8 cam locks (119081), 12 back-panel nails (101201), 4 hinge mounting plates (109221) with 8 screws (113287), 4 soft-close cup hinges (109338) with 8 screws (100365), 2 wall brackets (106989) and 4 washers (100823).
- Always fit the OBSERVATÖR diagonal cross-brace on the back uprights so the open pine frame cannot rack sideways.
- Count the upright holes carefully so all four support pins for the cabinet and each shelf sit at the exact same level.
All 12 steps
- 1
Stand the pine side units and fit the 4 cabinet pins
Stand the left and right solid pine side units upright 83 cm apart. Push 4 steel shelf support pins (131372) into the pre-drilled holes near the base of the front and back uprights at the exact same rung level to carry the cabinet.
- 2
Screw the OBSERVATÖR cross-brace to the back uprights
Open the two galvanized steel straps of the OBSERVATÖR cross-brace into an X across the back of the pine uprights and drive 4 screws (109041) through their end holes into the wood.
- 3
Prepare the cabinet bottom and side panels on the floor
Lay the cabinet bottom and both cabinet sides flat on the floor. Screw 4 cam bolts (118331) and push 4 wooden dowels (101350) into the cabinet bottom, then screw 4 hinge mounting plates (109221) with 8 screws (113287) onto the inner faces of the cabinet sides.
- 4
Mount the cabinet bottom and stand both cabinet sides
Set the cabinet bottom onto the 4 support pins in the lower bay of the shelving frame, then stand the left and right cabinet sides upright onto the cam bolts and dowels.
- 5
Lock the cabinet base, fit top dowels and prep the top
Insert 4 cam locks (119081) into the lower holes inside the cabinet sides and tighten them clockwise with a flat screwdriver. Push 4 dowels (101350) into the top edges of the sides and screw 4 cam bolts (118331) into the underside of the cabinet top on the floor.
- 6
Lower the cabinet top and lock it with cam locks
Turn the cabinet top over, lower it onto the dowels and cam bolts of the cabinet sides, and tighten 4 cam locks (119081) clockwise inside the upper corners.
- 7
Nail the back panel onto the rear of the cabinet
Hold the fibreboard back panel flush against the rear edges of the cabinet and hammer 12 nails (101201) along its bottom and top edges to square the cabinet box.
- 8
Fit the 4 interior shelf pins and slide in the shelf
Push 4 shelf supports (131372) into the pre-drilled holes inside the left and right cabinet sides at the same height, then slide the interior pine shelf in on top of them.
- 9
Screw the 4 soft-close cup hinges into the pine doors
Lay the left and right pine doors face down on the floor. Press 2 soft-close cup hinges (109338) into the 35 mm recesses of each door and drive 8 screws (100365) through the hinge wings.
- 10
Clip both pine doors onto the cabinet mounting plates
Hold each pine door up to the cabinet opening, hook the front of each hinge arm onto its 109221 mounting plate and press the rear of the arm until it clicks shut.
- 11
Push in 12 shelf pins and snap down the 3 pine shelves common mistake
Push 12 steel shelf supports (131372, 4 per shelf) into the holes of the left and right pine uprights at three equal heights above the cabinet, then lower the 3 solid pine shelves (83×50 cm) and press their metal edge rails down over the pins. Common mistake: Without the OBSERVATÖR diagonal cross-brace screwed onto the back uprights—or if a shelf support pin is pushed into a mismatched hole by even one rung—the open pine side ladders sway sideways under load and the shelves can drop off their pins.
- 12
Anchor the shelving unit to the wall with the brackets
Screw two L-shaped wall brackets (106989) onto the top rear corners using 2 washers (100823) and 2 screws (109041). Move the shelving unit against the wall and drive 2 wall screws with 2 washers (100823) through the upright slots into wall plugs suited to your wall. Done.
Questions
Why does the IKEA IVAR shelving unit need the OBSERVATÖR cross-brace?
Because IVAR shelves and side ladders form an open grid without a full back panel, the two diagonal galvanized steel straps of the OBSERVATÖR cross-brace (screwed into the back uprights with four 109041 screws) triangle the frame so it cannot sway or rack sideways under load.
How is the IVAR pine cabinet supported inside the shelving unit?
Four steel support pins (101324 / 131372) are pushed into matching holes on the inside of the front and back pine uprights, and the assembled 80×50×83 cm cabinet module sits directly on those four pins.
What fasteners hold the IVAR cabinet module together?
Eight cam bolts (118331), eight wooden dowels (101350) and eight cam locks (119081) join the pine top, bottom and sides; twelve nails (101201) secure the back panel; and four soft-close cup hinges (109338) with eight screws (100365) clip onto four mounting plates (109221) fastened with eight screws (113287).
Do I have to anchor the IVAR 89×50×179 cm shelving unit to the wall?
Yes. At 179 cm tall with heavy solid pine doors at the front, IKEA requires anchoring the unit to the wall using the two 106989 L-brackets, 109041 screws and 100823 washers, plus wall screws and plugs suited to your wall.
Safety
Furniture that tips over can cause serious or fatal crushing injuries. Always fix this IVAR shelving unit to the wall using the enclosed 106989 wall brackets and screws and plugs suited to your wall.
About this guide
The part numbers and counts match IKEA's assembly instructions, so you can check each piece against your box. The outer size, 89 × 50 × 179 cm, is IKEA's published size. Upright sections, rung spacing, cabinet board thicknesses and hole coordinates are our own estimates from IKEA’s assembly drawings. The 3D runs faster than real hands do.
Each 83×50 cm solid pine IVAR shelf holds up to 45 kg; the cabinet interior shelf holds up to 30 kg.
The manufacturer's instructions are on IKEA's product page (PDF). If something here differs from the manual in your box, follow the manual.
The 3D models, drawings and text are our own. IKEA and IVAR are named only to say which product this guide is for.
