The outer size (60 × 27 × 140 cm), the inside width and depth (55 and 22 cm), the shelves’ spacing, the bottom shelf’s 10 cm off the floor, the package weight and the screws’ and feet’s sizes are IKEA’s; the steel’s thickness, the shelves’ rims and where the holes are, are our own estimates, so they are close, not measured. IKEA publishes only the outer size.

IKEA HYLLIS shelving unit, in/outdoor, galvanised, 60×27×140 cm: interactive 3D assembly guide
Every step of assembling the IKEA HYLLIS 60×27×140, built in 3D. Press play to watch a step, drag to look around, or switch to Drawing to see it in clean black lines.
What is in the box
Four L-shaped posts and four shelves, all galvanised steel. The bag holds 32 screws (190018) and 4 plastic feet (157476). You need a cross-head screwdriver and a spirit level, and screws and plugs for the wall, which are not included.
- Work on a rug or the flattened carton, so the steel and your floor do not get scratched.
- Each post has a top end, with two pairs of holes close together near its tip, and a bottom end, for the foot.
All 5 steps
- 1
Push the feet onto the posts
Lay the 4 posts on the floor. Find each post’s bottom end: its first holes are about 10 cm in, while the top end has two pairs of holes close together near its tip. Push a plastic foot (157476) onto the bottom end of each post.
- 2
Screw the shelves to two posts
Lay two posts on the floor, 60 cm apart with their feet at the same end, each lying on one flange with the other standing up on the outside. Stand the 4 shelves on their edges between them, their flat tops towards the posts’ top ends and the top shelf level with them, the holes in line. Drive a screw (190018) through each standing flange into each shelf: 8 screws.
- 3
Lay on the other two posts
Lay the other two posts on the shelves’ upper edges, their feet at the same end as the first two, one flange flat on the shelves and the other down over the shelves’ ends. Fix each corner with 2 screws (190018), one down through the top and one through the side: 16 screws.
- 4
Turn it over and screw the other side
Turn the unit over onto the two posts you have just fitted. Drive a screw (190018) down through the upper flange of each of the first two posts into each shelf: 8 screws.
- 5
Stand it up, tighten and fix it to the wall common mistake
With two people, stand the unit up on its feet. Tighten all 32 screws with the cross-head screwdriver while you can still reach the back. Push it back against the wall, check it stands straight with a spirit level and fix it with 2 screws through the holes near the top of the back posts, ones that suit your wall: they are not included. Done. Common mistake: At 140 cm tall and only 27 cm deep, the unit can tip forward when its top shelves are loaded or someone pulls or climbs on them, and IKEA says it must be fastened to the wall. Always fix it with two screws and plugs that suit your wall, through the holes near the top of the two back posts.
Questions
Do I have to fix HYLLIS to the wall?
Yes. IKEA says this shelving unit must be fastened to the wall, and the screws and plugs for it are not in the box: use ones that suit your wall. Two go through the holes near the top of the two back posts.
Which end of the HYLLIS posts do the feet go on?
The bottom end. Each post has two pairs of holes close together near its top end; at the bottom end the first holes are about 10 cm in. Push the plastic feet (157476) onto the bottom ends in step 1.
How many screws does HYLLIS take?
All 32 in the bag (190018): two at every corner of each of the 4 shelves, one through each flange of the post. You drive 8 in step 2, 16 in step 3 and 8 in step 4, then tighten all 32 once the unit stands.
What tools do I need?
A cross-head screwdriver for the 32 screws (190018 has a Pozidriv 2 head), a spirit level, and a screwdriver that fits the wall screws you choose: they are not included.
How much can a HYLLIS shelf hold?
IKEA gives 25 kg for each shelf. IKEA says the unit can be used both indoors and outdoors.
Safety
Furniture that tips over can cause serious or fatal crushing injuries. IKEA says this shelving unit must be fastened to the wall. Screws and plugs for the wall are not included: use ones that suit your wall, and ask a professional if you are not sure.
About this guide
This is an independent 3D engineering guide modeled from physical hardware specifications and standard fastener part numbers so you can identify your pieces before building. The outer size, 60 × 27 × 140 cm, is IKEA's published size. The 3D runs faster than real hands do.
Each shelf holds up to 25 kg, according to IKEA. IKEA says it can be used both indoors and outdoors.
The manufacturer's instructions are on IKEA's product page (PDF). If something here differs from the manual in your box, follow the manual.
